Lee Joon Ik, the director of??King and the Clown??and??The Throne, depicts the life of Korean revolutionary activist Park Yeol in the historical blockbuster??Anarchist from Colony. Lee Je Hoon (I Can Speak) plays the hero who fights for independence alongside his Japanese lover portrayed by breakout star Choi Hee Seo (Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet). The actress was named Best New Actress at various film awards, including the 2017 Buil Film Awards, Blue Dragon Film Awards and Baeksang Arts Awards. She was also crowned Best Actress at the 54th Grand Bell Awards, while Lee Joon Ik won Best Director.

After joining the anti-Japan March First Movement, anarchist Park Yeol (Lee Je Hoon) continues his studies in Tokyo, where he forms an independence group that also includes his Japanese lover Kaneko Fumiko (Choi Hee Seo). A devastating earthquake hits the Kanto region in 1923. Japan seizes the chance to kill thousands of Korean people. Park Yeol risks his life to expose the brutal massacre, but he faces prison for plotting to assassinate Japan's Crown Prince Hirohito.
