Hodaka runs away from his remote island to Tokyo, but life is lonely and difficult for the broke youth. Flooded with rain every day, the big city is endlessly gray and alienating until he finds a job working for a quirky occult tabloid. One day, he meets a girl named Hina who has the mysterious ability to make the skies clear. When she prays, the rain stops briefly and the sun appears. They start a booming business to help customers who need clear skies for special events. However, the prayer ritual takes a gradual toll on Hina whose power seems to be connected to an ancient myth.
